The word yin is taken from the Taoist philosophy of yin and yang. In this context, Yin Yoga is a slower approach compared with the yang of more vigorous exercise.

Modern studies have shown that muscle tissue relaxes one layer at a time, so holding postures for a lengthened period of up to several minutes allows for deep tissue relaxation. This is a fabulous way to increase flexibility, become familiar with specific poses, or prepare the body for a good night’s rest.
